Independence
As with many other real estate developments, Buenos Aires began to gentrify and then there were arguments with the HOA trying to impose ridiculous rules on them, so on May 25, 1810, they began their quest for independence from Spain.
This is commemorated with an obelisk in the middle of the square with City Hall, the Pink House and the Church of St. John the Baptist around it.

As with many other arguments with an HOA, though, the battle was not quick and true independence was not achieved until July 9, 1860, which they consider the Argentine equivalent of the US Independence day.
