Things are a little different traveling this time around.  It seems like the luggage is much heavier than it has been in the past, although part of that is undoubtedly due to the fact that we have to pack for several seasons – it’s the height of summer in South America, with highs last week in the low to mid 90’s.  On the other hand, go a bit further south and it is 35 degrees.  This means we need both swimsuits and parkas, although presumably we won’t be wearing them at the same time.

So, any hope of packing in a carry on was out the window.  Given that we’ll be traveling 21 days that was probably just a dream anyhow, but I don’t know that we expected the large bags to be quite so heavy – and there are 3 of them, since some things (winter coats, specifically) simply don’t squoosh down the same way that beachwear does.  Fortunately, we got to the airport (thank you, Hickory Hop!) and were able to check them in without any issues, leaving us each with a carry on and a backpack full of essentials needed for a 9-hour airplane ride, including enough electronics to again pilot the Starship Enterprise across the galaxy.
