Trek to Buenos Aires
Two airplane flights to get here, and we touched down in Buenos Aires at exactly 7:00 a.m. local time (5:00 a.m. North Carolina time). The flight was smooth, the flight attendants helpful and pleasant.
Here’s the thing, though – the last big trip we took that required an overnight flight was in ….hmmmm…I don’t remember the year. We were a few years younger and significantly lighter than we are now and that combination made a difference in the toll that travel has taken on us. I don’t know that we could have made it in Coach without being completely crippled up for the rest of the trip. Frequent Flier Miles were on our side, though, so we were in First Class from Charlotte to Miami and Business Class from Miami to Buenos Aires.
The seat belt cuts in a bit more than it used to, and I (especially) can’t hear much over the roar of the airplane. My hearing aids turn it in roughly the equivalent of a weed wacker, but without them I don’t get anything. Fortunately, I listen to things on my iPhone through them so I could do audio books or a movie, had I been so inclined. In Business class they provide these extremely nice noise-cancelling headsets; they effectively block much of the noise even if you aren’t listening to their media. They also guard these very carefully and take them up before the plane lands to make certain that they are all returned!
You can’t talk over them, though. We eventually found the best way to communicate was to type a text on our phone, show it to the other one and then read it. It was just a lot less frustrating than doing the “What? WHAT?” game.
